The passion flower originates from the forests of Central and South America and was brought to Europe by sailors. Passion flower is mainly used for nervous disorders such as nervous weakness, anxiety or restlessness and for difficulties to fall asleep. The medicinal plant is also used as a component of heart medicines. It is particularly effective in combination with valerian and balm.
Hops have an overall anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and above all calming effect, which is due to the lupulin contained in the hop cones.
Balm leaves have been used as a pharmaceutical remedy for restlessness and poor sleep since ancient times. Balm was nominated the medicinal plant of the year in 1988. Hildegard von Bingen recommended balm as a remedy that “makes the heart joyful”.
The healing power of the valerian plant is mainly found in the essential oil of rhizomes and roots. It is composed of a variety of effective components. The main ingredient of valerian oil is bornyl acetate. Other ingredients include β caryophyllene, valeranone, valerenal, bornylisovalerate and valerenic acid, among many others. It is known from clinical studies that the ingredients interact with certain docking sites of a messenger substance (GABA receptors) in nerve cells. This leads to a relaxing effect.
